In a tragic incident that has shocked both the beauty community and the broader public, 23-year-old Mexican TikTok influencer Valeria Márquez was fatally shot during a livestream from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, on May 13, 2025.
Márquez, who had amassed nearly 200,000 followers on TikTok, was broadcasting live from Blossom The Beauty Lounge when the assailant, posing as a delivery person, entered the salon and opened fire. Disturbing footage captured the moment Márquez clutched her chest and collapsed. After the initial shots, the gunman reportedly entered the salon to fire another round before fleeing the scene on a motorbike. Emergency responders declared her dead at the scene.
Prior to the attack, Márquez had expressed concern during her livestream about a suspicious delivery. She mentioned that someone had previously attempted to deliver an expensive gift to her, which she found unsettling. Authorities are investigating the incident as a femicide—a gender-based killing—under protocols that consider factors like public exposure of the body and relationships with the perpetrator. No suspect has been named yet.
The murder has drawn widespread attention to Mexico’s ongoing crisis of gender-based violence. According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mexico, alongside Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia, has one of the highest femicide rates in the region, with 1.3 deaths per 100,000 women in 2023. Jalisco ranks sixth in Mexico for homicides, with 906 reported since the start of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s term in October 2024.
