Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is increasingly under fire from fans, pundits, and former players, raising doubts about his future at Old Trafford after a rocky start to the 2025–26 Premier League season.
A draw with Fulham—just the second game of the season—ended 1–1, extending the team's winless streak to two matches. This result drew heavy criticism, especially since United’s sole goal came from an own goal by a Fulham player. Fans were particularly frustrated with Amorim’s decisions, such as leaving rising star Kobbie Mainoo on the bench while choosing to play Manuel Ugarte instead. Many see that choice as a questionable tactical move based on Mainoo's recent form.
Online backlash from supporters has ramped up, with increasing calls for Amorim’s job due to a perceived lack of progress under his management, despite the club spending over £200 million on new attacking players.
Club icon Wayne Rooney didn’t hold back, saying there are “no excuses” for the team's poor start this season. He criticized United’s defensive weaknesses and unclear player roles, despite a thorough pre-season and significant squad investments.
At the same time, The Guardian points out the structural issues that Amorim must tackle: a squad that doesn’t fit his 3-4-2-1 system, shaky defense, inconsistent goalkeeping, and trouble integrating promising young players like Mainoo and Amad Diallo. The report also notes that Amorim currently has one of the lowest win percentages for a United manager since 1931, putting him in a precarious position unless results improve soon.
On a tactical note, sources indicate the team has struggled to make the most of key opportunities, with even the goalkeeper Altay Bayindir receiving some ironic credit for creating the only “big chance” against Fulham, which underscores United’s attacking deficiencies despite their significant spending.
Amorim admitted the team’s overly defensive approach—especially after taking the lead—cost them a vital win. He expressed optimism but acknowledged that the squad’s mindset needs to change if they want to prevent further setbacks in their season.
