Social media activist Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after five days in detention. His release was confirmed on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, following widespread public outcry and legal pressure.
VeryDarkMan was arrested on Friday, May 2, 2025, inside a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) branch in Abuja, alongside a companion identified only as C Park. The EFCC stated that the arrest was due to his failure to honor multiple invitations regarding allegations of financial misconduct. However, his supporters and legal team have disputed these claims, arguing that the arrest was politically motivated.
In a video shared on Instagram, VeryDarkMan expressed his relief upon release, stating, "Anyways, we're outside. With my lawyer, of course," and humorously adding, "So right now, Barrister Deji you're going to survive me with at least \$3,000 for a start." His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, had previously criticized the EFCC for what he termed a "social media bail," highlighting the lack of formal documentation despite the agency's announcement of bail.
The arrest and subsequent release of VeryDarkMan have sparked significant public debate, with many questioning the EFCC's handling of the case and its implications for freedom of expression in Nigeria.
