The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has issued a stern warning to bandits and other criminal elements operating in the northwest and other regions, urging them to lay down their arms and embrace peace or face severe consequences. This statement was made by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, during a recent visit to the 213 Forward Operating Base in Katsina State.
Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized that the NAF's intensified operations, including the transformation of Operation Hadarin Daji to Operation Fansan Yamma, have significantly increased the pressure on criminal groups. He stated, "From my assessment, bandits and other criminals are in for a very hard time. My advice to them is that they should surrender their arms and embrace peace; otherwise, in no time, they will be gone." He further warned that those who choose to continue their criminal activities would meet their "early graves."
The NAF has been actively engaged in operations targeting bandit hideouts and strongholds across the country. In March 2025, precision airstrikes in Katsina State led to the neutralization of over 20 bandits and the destruction of key camps belonging to notorious bandit leaders. These operations are part of the NAF's broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace to affected communities.
In addition to military actions, the NAF has been involved in joint operations with other security agencies to enhance operational effectiveness. The recent commissioning of three new projects at the Katsina base underscores the NAF's commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting personnel in their mission to combat insecurity.
The call for bandits to surrender aligns with ongoing peace initiatives in various states. In Plateau State, for instance, some bandits have voluntarily laid down their arms, turning in seven AK-47 rifles to authorities. This development reflects the potential success of non-violent approaches in addressing security challenges.
The NAF's message is clear: the window for reconciliation remains open, but those who persist in criminal activities will face relentless military action. As operations continue, the NAF remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.
