Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to convert the newly constructed Government House, built by his predecessor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, into a five-star hotel. This decision follows Otti's earlier statement that refurbishing the Government House was not a priority for his administration. He emphasized that resources would be directed toward projects that have a more immediate impact on the lives of Abians. However, he assured that the seat of power would be addressed in due course.
The Government House, located at Ogurube Layout in Umuahia, was inaugurated without being completed . Governor Otti has stated that his administration will assess the quality of work done and determine what is needed to complete the building. In the meantime, he has opted to operate from a rented apartment rather than the unfinished Government House.
The decision to convert the Government House into a five-star hotel aligns with the state's broader efforts to boost its hospitality industry and attract investment. Governor Otti has previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Radisson Blu to revamp the long-abandoned Enyimba International Hotel in Aba into a five-star facility. This project is expected to create up to 5,000 job opportunities and significantly contribute to the state's internally generated revenue.
By transforming the Government House into a luxury hotel, the Otti administration aims to enhance the state's tourism infrastructure and create a sustainable source of revenue. The project is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, contributing to the state's economic development.
As plans progress, the Abia State Government is committed to ensuring that the transformation aligns with international standards and meets the expectations of both residents and visitors.
