The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the arrest of activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), in Abuja earlier today.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, VDM was taken into custody following his repeated failure to respond to multiple invitations by the Commission. The EFCC emphasized that VDM is being held to answer questions related to ongoing investigations into bribery allegations involving some of its officers. These allegations surfaced after a viral video, shared by VDM, featured a voice recording of socialite Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, claiming that EFCC officials accepted a ₦15 million bribe to drop money laundering charges against him.
The EFCC has assured the public that VDM's detention is in accordance with legal procedures and is necessary to facilitate the investigation process. The Commission has also extended an invitation to both VDM and Bobrisky to appear at its Lagos Directorate to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
This development has sparked public debate, with some supporters of VDM questioning the timing and transparency of the EFCC's actions. However, the EFCC maintains that its operations are conducted impartially and in the interest of justice.
As the investigation progresses, the EFCC has pledged to keep the public informed and to take appropriate action based on the findings.
